Margaret Matthews
Margaret Matthews ( Margaret Rejean Matthews, married Wilburn; born August 5, 1935 in Griffin , Georgia ) is a former American sprinter and long jumper .
At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , she was eliminated in the long jump in qualification, but won the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay with the US team consisting of Mae Faggs , Matthews, Wilma Rudolph and Isabelle Daniels .
In 1959 she won the silver medal in the long jump at the Pan American Games in Chicago .
In 1958, with her personal best of 11.1 s, she was US champion over 100 yards . In the long jump, she won the national title three times (1956-1958). She set four national records in this discipline, most recently with 6.18 m on August 6, 1958 in Budapest .
Margaret Matthews graduated from Tennessee State University . Her son Barry Wilburn was successful as a professional American football player.
