The Spalding County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Griffin , named after General L. Griffin , the first president of the Monroe Railroad Company.

The county is located in central northwest Georgia, about 90 km west of Alabama , and has an area of 517 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Henry County , Butts County , Lamar County , Pike County , Meriwether County , Coweta County , Fayette County, and Clayton County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .
history
Spalding County was formed on December 20, 1851 as the 96th County of Georgia from parts of Fayette County, Henry Counties and Pike Counties. It was named after Thomas Spalding , a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and the first Georgia person known to harvest cotton and sugar beets.

According to the 2010 census, the then 64,073 inhabitants were distributed over 23,565 inhabited households, which results in an average of 2.67 people per household. There are a total of 26,777 households.
71.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.12 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.2% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.6% of all households.
28.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 48.5% of the population were male and 51.5% were female.
62.7% of the population identified themselves as whites, 32.8% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 3.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 40,548 USD , while 23.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
