The Pickens County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Jasper .

The county is located in northern Georgia, about 60 km from the northern borders of Tennessee and North Carolina and about 100 km to the west from Alabama . It covers an area of ​​603 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dawson County , Cherokee County , Gordon County, and Gilmer County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Pickens County was formed on December 5, 1853 as the 100th county in Georgia from parts of Cherokee County and Gilmer County. It was named after Andrew Pickens , a general in the Revolutionary War.

There are marble deposits in Pickens County . The white marble quarried there was used, among other things, for the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC . The so-called Georgia Marble Festival takes place in Jasper every year in October . This is also where the county's headquarters, built in 1949, are located, whose facade is also made of marble.
