The Lumpkin County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Dahlonega . The name of the city comes from the Indian word Taulonica , which means "yellow gold".

This county in northern Georgia, about 25 miles from the northern border of Tennessee , has an area of 738 square kilometers (one square kilometer is water) and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: White County , Hall County , Dawson County , Fannin County, and Union County .

Lumpkin County was formed on December 3, 1832 from parts of Cherokee County, Habersham County and Hall County. It was named after Wilson Lumpkin , a Georgia governor and member of Congress.
