The Marion County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Buena Vista , named after a battle of 1847 in the Mexican War.

Located in western Georgia, about 25 miles from the Alabama border, the county has an area of 952 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Taylor County , Schley County , Webster County , Stewart County , Chattahoochee County and Talbot County .

The county is part of the Columbus metropolitan area .

history

Marion County was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 72nd County in Georgia. It was named after Francis Marion , a general and hero of the Revolutionary War who successfully fought the British in South Carolina .

According to the 2010 census, the then 8,742 inhabitants were distributed over 3,420 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.53 people per household. There are a total of 4156 households.

69.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.05 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 34.1% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 26.6% of all households.

27.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 49.7% of the population were male and 50.3% were female.

60.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 32.7% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 4.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 6.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
