The Marion County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Buena Vista , named after a battle of 1847 in the Mexican War.

Located in western Georgia, about 25 miles from the Alabama border, the county has an area of ​​952 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Taylor County , Schley County , Webster County , Stewart County , Chattahoochee County and Talbot County .

The county is part of the Columbus metropolitan area .

history

Marion County was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 72nd County in Georgia. It was named after Francis Marion , a general and hero of the Revolutionary War who successfully fought the British in South Carolina .

27.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 49.7% of the population were male and 50.3% were female.

60.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 32.7% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 4.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 6.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 35,484 USD , while 25.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.
