The Telfair County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is McRae-Helena .

The county is located in central southeast Georgia and covers an area of 1,150 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wheeler County , Jeff Davis County , Coffee County , Ben Hill County , Wilcox County, and Dodge County .

history

Telfair County was formed on December 10, 1807 as the 35th County of Georgia. It was named after Edward Telfair , a native Scotsman and governor of Georgia.

According to the 2010 census, the 16,500 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 5,543 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.41 people per household. There are a total of 7,297 households.

65.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.02 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 31.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 29.7% of all households.

22.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 29.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 57.3% of the population were male and 42.7% were female.

57.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 36.5% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 4.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.7% to several ethnic groups. 12.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
