The Hart County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Hartwell .

The county is located in northeast Georgia, borders South Carolina to the northeast and has an area of 664 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elbert County , Madison County and Franklin County .

history

Hart County was formed on December 7, 1853 from parts of Elbert County, Franklin County and Madison County. It is the only county in Georgia to be named after a woman: Nancy Hart , who shot and killed five strangers when they attacked her home during the American Civil War . The city of Hartwell was also named after her.

According to the 2010 census, the then 25,213 inhabitants were distributed over 10,121 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.43 people per household. There are a total of 13,007 households.
