The Hart County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Hartwell .

The county is located in northeast Georgia, borders South Carolina to the northeast and has an area of ​​664 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elbert County , Madison County and Franklin County .

history

Hart County was formed on December 7, 1853 from parts of Elbert County, Franklin County and Madison County. It is the only county in Georgia to be named after a woman: Nancy Hart , who shot and killed five strangers when they attacked her home during the American Civil War . The city of Hartwell was also named after her.

77.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 18.7% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.3% to several ethnic groups. 3.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 36,867 USD , while 24.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
