The Fayette County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Fayetteville .

The county is located in central northwest Georgia, about 50 miles to the west from Alabama , and covers an area of 516 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Clayton County , Spalding County , Coweta County, and Fulton County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .
history
Fayette County was formed on May 15, 1821 as the 49th county in Georgia from parts of the land of the Creek Indians . It was named, like Fayetteville, after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a commander of George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. The Fayette County Courthouse County Courthouse in Fayetteville was built in 1825, just four years after the county and city were founded, and is the oldest surviving courthouse in Georgia.

71.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 20.1% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 3.9% as Asian Americans . 2.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 6.3% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 79,993 USD , while 8.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
