The Greene County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Greensboro .

The county is located in north-central Georgia and is approximately 37 miles northeast of South Carolina . It has an area of 1,052 square kilometers, of which 47 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Oglethorpe County , Taliaferro County , Hancock County , Putnam County , Morgan County, and Oconee County .

history

Greene County was formed on February 3, 1786 as the 11th County in Georgia from parts of Washington County. It was named after General Nathanael Greene , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the 2010 census, the 15,994 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 6,519 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.43 people per household. There are a total of 8,688 households.

71.7% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.85 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 26.7% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 36.1% of all households.

22.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 30.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 48.8% of the population were male and 51.2% were female.
