The Decatur County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Bainbridge , named after Commodore William Bainbridge , commander of the USS Constitution .

The county is located in southwest Georgia on the northern border with Florida and has an area of 1,614 square kilometers, of which 68 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Baker County , Mitchell County , Grady County , Seminole County and Miller County .

history

Decatur County was formed on December 8, 1823 from parts of Early County. It was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur , who defeated the Barbary Coast Pirates in 1815.

According to the 2010 census, the then 27,842 inhabitants were distributed over 10,390 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.58 people per household. There are a total of 12,125 households.

69.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.10 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 35.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 27.3% of all households.
