The Hancock County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Sparta , which was formerly called Greek City by Greek immigrants .

The county is located in central northeast Georgia and is approximately 50 miles from South Carolina in the northeast . It has an area of 1,240 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Taliaferro County , Warren County , Glascock County , Washington County , Baldwin County , Putnam County, and Greene County .

Hancock County was formed on December 17, 1793 as the 15th County of Georgia from parts of Greene County and Washington County. It was named after John Hancock , who was the first to sign the Georgian Declaration of Independence.

According to the 2010 census, the then 9,429 inhabitants were distributed over 5,360 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.38 people per household. There are a total of 3341 households.
