Barrow County was formed on July 7, 1914 from parts of Walton, Gwinnett and Jackson Counties and named after David Crenshaw Barrow , a former dean of the University of Georgia .

In 1786 the country was still inhabited by the Indians. The first were the Creek Indians. They named the area Snodon . The first whites came and traded cheap glass beads and brightly colored cloth for the land along the Mulberry River . Lon Drager built a log cabin on the site known as the Black Gum Hollow in 1794 . As it turned out later, this was the place of the Indian settlement Snodon . The log cabin later became the Jug Tavern . In 1819 the first post office and an office for the justice of the peace were opened in the "Truman Smith Mill". In 1887 the railway company "Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern" (later Gainesville Midland Railway) built the railway line, with stations in Bethlehem, Jug Tavern and Mulberry.

In 1892 the city of Auburn was founded. It was named after the red clay in the area that was used to dye the clothes. In 1893 the town of Winder , formerly Jug Tavern, was added. Jug Tavern was renamed in honor of the railroad pioneer John Winder , who laid the rails through town. At the time, the city of Winder was in 3 different counties. In 1897, AH O'Neal , the first industrialist in town, began producing soft drinks under the name Winder Bottling . Two of his products were called Red Rock Gingerale and Beerwine . He made the city known throughout the country and only a few years later other well-known companies had settled, such as Bell Overall Olant or the First National Bank . In 1905 the first car was bought in what would later become Barrow County.

Barrow County was established in 1914. It was the only county named after a living person. In 1929 the first airport opened in the area. In 1931, Richard B. Russell became Governor of Georgia of Barrow County. To date, he is the youngest governor in Georgian history. 1950 was the laying of the foundation stone for the Winder-Barrow Hospital . In 1960 there were 2,700 telephone lines in the county, of which 1969 direct long-distance calls were possible. The Holly Hill Mall Shopping Center opens in 1972 . At the same time, Winder-Barrow High School burns down. The '80s were the decade of restaurants along Highway 29 in Winder. McDonald’s was the first to open a restaurant and everyone else followed like: Burger King , Arby’s , Captain D’s Taco Bell , Pizza Hut and Golden Corral , to name a few.
