The Oglethorpe County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Lexington .

The county is located in north-central Georgia, in the southeast about 30 km from the western border of South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,145 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water surface, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elbert County , Wilkes County , Taliaferro County , Greene County , Oconee County , Clarke County, and Madison County .

The county is part of the Athens – Clarke County metropolitan area .

history

Oglethorpe County was formed on December 19, 1793 as the 19th county in Georgia. It was named after the founder of Georgia, General James E. Oglethorpe .
