The Oglethorpe County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Lexington .

The county is located in north-central Georgia, in the southeast about 30 km from the western border of South Carolina and has an area of 1,145 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water surface, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Elbert County , Wilkes County , Taliaferro County , Greene County , Oconee County , Clarke County, and Madison County .
The county is part of the Athens – Clarke County metropolitan area .
history
Oglethorpe County was formed on December 19, 1793 as the 19th county in Georgia. It was named after the founder of Georgia, General James E. Oglethorpe .

According to the 2010 census, the then 14,899 inhabitants were distributed among 5,647 inhabited households, which results in an average of 2.61 people per household. There are a total of 6,484 households.

78.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 17.2% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 1.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.9% to several ethnic groups. 3.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
