The Wilkes County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Washington .

The county is located in northeast Georgia, about ten kilometers to the northeast from South Carolina and has an area of 1,228 square kilometers, seven square kilometers of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lincoln County , McDuffie County , Warren County , Taliaferro Counties , Oglethorpe Counties, and Elbert Counties .

Wilkes County was formed as the 8th County of Georgia and the Original County on February 25, 1784 (different location 1777). It was named after John Wilkes , a British MP who campaigned for the new colonies.

According to the 2010 census, the 10,593 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 4,263 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.40 people per household. There are a total of 5,158 households.
66.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.96 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 30.0% of all households and persons aged at least 65 in 34.7% of all households.
24.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 25.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 48.8% of the population were male and 51.2% were female.
53.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 42.8% as African-Americans , 0.2% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 3.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 33,462 USD , while 26.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
