The Wilkes County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Washington .

The county is located in northeast Georgia, about ten kilometers to the northeast from South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,228 square kilometers, seven square kilometers of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lincoln County , McDuffie County , Warren County , Taliaferro Counties , Oglethorpe Counties, and Elbert Counties .

history

Wilkes County was formed as the 8th County of Georgia and the Original County on February 25, 1784 (different location 1777). It was named after John Wilkes , a British MP who campaigned for the new colonies.
