The Echols County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Statenville , named after Captain James W. Staten , who opened the first store here.

The county is located in the extreme south-southeast of Georgia and borders the northern border of Florida in the south . It has an area of ​​1090 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clinch County , Lowndes County and Lanier County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Valdosta .

history

Echols County was formed on December 13, 1858 from parts of Clinch County and Lowndes County. It was named after Robert Milner Echols , a member of the General Assembly and Senate President. He died with the rank of Brigade General during the US-Mexican War.
