The Echols County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Statenville , named after Captain James W. Staten , who opened the first store here.

The county is located in the extreme south-southeast of Georgia and borders the northern border of Florida in the south . It has an area of 1090 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clinch County , Lowndes County and Lanier County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of Valdosta .

history

Echols County was formed on December 13, 1858 from parts of Clinch County and Lowndes County. It was named after Robert Milner Echols , a member of the General Assembly and Senate President. He died with the rank of Brigade General during the US-Mexican War.

According to the 2010 census, the 4034 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 1329 inhabited households, which gives an average of 3.04 people per household. There are a total of 1558 households.

77.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.33 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 43.6% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 22.6% of all households.
