The county is located in east-east Georgia and covers an area of ​​641 square kilometers, five square kilometers of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Toombs County , Jeff Davis County , Wheeler County , Treutlen County, and Emanuel County .

history

Montgomery County was formed on December 19, 1823 as the 18th County of Georgia from parts of Washington County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a Revolutionary War general who was fatally wounded in the Battle of Québec .

Parts of this county were later formed into the following counties: Wheeler County , Tattnall County , Toombs County , Emanuel County , Treutlen County, and Dodge County .

69.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 26.2% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 3.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.1% to several ethnic groups. 5.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .

The average annual income per household was 38,111 USD , while 22.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
