The Oconee County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Watkinsville .

Located in north-central Georgia, the county has an area of ​​482 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Clarke County , Oglethorpe County , Greene County , Morgan County , Walton County, and Barrow Counties .

The county is part of the Athens – Clarke County metropolitan area .

history

Oconee County was formed on February 25, 1875 as the 135th County in Georgia from parts of Clarke County. It was named after the Oconee River .

According to the 2010 census, the then 32,808 inhabitants were distributed among 11,622 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.81 people per household. There are a total of 12,383 households.

80.4% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.16 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 43.4% of all households and persons aged at least 65 in 21.6% of all households.

30.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 31.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 48.8% of the population were male and 51.2% were female.

88.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 5.1% as African-Americans , 0.1% as Indians and 3.1% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.4% to several ethnic groups. 4.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 75,946 USD , while 7.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
