The Jasper County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Monticello and was named after the home of President Thomas Jefferson .

The county is located in north-central Georgia and covers an area of ​​968 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Morgan County , Putnam County , Jones County , Monroe County , Butts County, and Newton County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Jasper County was formed on December 10, 1807 as the 34th County in Georgia from parts of Baldwin County. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper , a hero of the Revolutionary War.

According to the 2010 census, the then 13,900 inhabitants were distributed among 5,044 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.74 people per household. There are a total of 6,153 households.

73.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 21.8% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.2% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.7% to several ethnic groups. 3.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 42,368 USD , while 20.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
