The Lamar County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Barnesville , named after Gideon Barnes , a tavern owner.

Located in mid-northwest Georgia, about 120 km to the west from Alabama , the county covers 481 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Butts County , Monroe County , Upson County , Pike County and Spalding County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .
history
Lamar County was formed on August 17, 1920 as the 158th County in Georgia from parts of Monroe County and Pike Counties. It was named after Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar , a Confederate colonel, minister and member of the Supreme Court.

According to the 2010 census, the then 18,317 inhabitants were distributed over 6,618 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.55 people per household. There are a total of 7,474 households.
69.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.04 people. Children under the age of 18 lived in 31.9% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 27.6% of all households.
27.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 25.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.
66.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 30.8% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 0.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.7% to several ethnic groups. 1.9% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 40,344 USD , while 22.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
