The metropolitan area of Atlanta (ger .: Atlanta metropolitan area ) is a metropolitan area in the US state of Georgia . It represents a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) defined by the Office of Management and Budget and is officially designated by the authority as the Atlanta – Sandy Springs – Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area .

The region comprises 29 counties in the northwest of the state. It is the largest metropolitan area in Georgia and the ninth largest in the United States. The center of the area is the city of Atlanta .

At the time of the 2010 census , the area had 5,268,860 residents.
