The Meriwether County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Greenville , named after General Nathaniel Greene . At the 2000 census , the county had 22,534 residents and a population density of 17 people per square kilometer.

The county is located in northwest Georgia, about 25 miles from the Alabama border and has an area of ​​1,309 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Spalding County , Pike County , Upson County , Talbot County , Harris County , Troup County, and Coweta County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Meriwether County was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 73rd county in Georgia. It was named after David Meriwether , a general in the Revolutionary War and Congressman from Georgia.

The Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation with the Polio Hall of Fame has been located in Warm Springs since 1958 , where the bronze busts of 15 polio researchers as well as Roosevelt and Basil O'Connor were installed.
