The Meriwether County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Greenville , named after General Nathaniel Greene . At the 2000 census , the county had 22,534 residents and a population density of 17 people per square kilometer.

The county is located in northwest Georgia, about 25 miles from the Alabama border and has an area of 1,309 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Spalding County , Pike County , Upson County , Talbot County , Harris County , Troup County, and Coweta County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Atlanta .
history
Meriwether County was formed on December 14, 1827 as the 73rd county in Georgia. It was named after David Meriwether , a general in the Revolutionary War and Congressman from Georgia.
The Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation with the Polio Hall of Fame has been located in Warm Springs since 1958 , where the bronze busts of 15 polio researchers as well as Roosevelt and Basil O'Connor were installed.

According to the 2010 census, the then 21,992 inhabitants were distributed over 8,522 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.55 people per household. There are a total of 9,957 households.
69.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.09 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 32.1% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 30.5% of all households.
26.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 47.7% of the population were male and 52.3% were female.
57.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 39.1% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 0.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 1.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 34,989 USD , while 23.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
