The Lanier County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Lakeland , named after the many lakes in the area.

The county is located in southern Georgia, about 25 miles from the northern Florida border and has an area of 518 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Atkinson County , Clinch County , Echols County , Lowndes County and Berrien County .
The county is part of the metropolitan area of Valdosta .
history
Lanier County was formed on August 7, 1920 as the 155th County in Georgia. It was named after the Georgia-based poet Sidney Lanier .

According to the 2010 census, the 10,078 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 3,608 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.72 people per household. There are a total of 4,249 households.
72.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.18 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 40.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 23.0% of all households.
29.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 29.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 15.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 50.4% of the population were male and 49.6% were female.
70.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 23.7% as African-Americans , 0.5% as Indians and 1.0% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 31,682 USD , while 28.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.
