The Wilkinson County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Irwinton , named after Jared Irwin , a governor of Georgia.

The county is located a few miles east of the geographic center of Georgia and has an area of ​​1,171 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Washington County , Johnson County , Laurens County , Twiggs County , Jones County, and Baldwin Counties .

history

Wilkinson County was formed as the 29th County of Georgia on May 11, 1803. It was named after General James Wilkinson of Maryland , an officer in the Revolutionary War and the first governor of the Louisiana Territory .
