Irwinton is a city and also the county seat of Wilkinson County in the US state of Georgia with 589 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Irwinton is about 40 km east of Macon and about 170 km southeast of Atlanta .

history

The settlement was founded in 1811 and later named after the politician Jared Irwin (1796–1798 and 1806–1809 Governor of Georgia). The original name of the place was Bethel and then High Hill Fraction. During the Civil War the place was almost completely destroyed and burned down by General William T. Sherman in the course of his Atlanta campaign . In 1904 the place received the status of City .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 589 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 217 inhabited households , which gives an average of 2.53 people per household. There are a total of 259 households.

68.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.12 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 32.3% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 32.7% of all households.

25% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 25.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 47% of the population were male and 53% were female.

37.4% of the population identified themselves as white , 55% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 6.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.7% to several ethnic groups. 8.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 39,286 USD , while 26.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Irwinton is crossed by US Highway 441 and Georgia State Route 57 . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 170 km northwest).

Irwinton has four public schools, the Wilkinson County Primary, Elementary, Middle, and High School .
