The Lowndes County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Valdosta , named after a valley in Italy where Governor George Troup had his estates.

The county is located in southern Georgia, bordering north Florida, and has an area of ​​1,323 square kilometers, 17 square kilometers of which are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lanier County , Echols County , Brooks County , Cook County and Berrien County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Valdosta .

history

Lowndes County was formed on December 23, 1825. It was named after William Lowndes , a statesman from South Carolina . The first county seat was in Franklinville in 1828, but moved to Troupville in 1837 until the railroad surveyors came. The residents decided to move to the railway line about 5 km further with the whole city. In 1860 it was renamed Valdosta.

The Moody Air Force Base of the United States Air Force has also been located here since 1941 .

According to the 2010 census, the 109,233 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 39,747 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.59 people per household. There are a total of 43,921 households.
