The Toombs County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Lyons .

The county is located in east Georgia and has an area of ​​955 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tattnall County , Appling County , Jeff Davis County , Montgomery County, and Emanuel Counties .

history

Toombs County was formed on August 18, 1905 as the 142nd County of Georgia from parts of Emanuel County, Montgomery County, and Tattnall Counties. It was named after Robert Augustus Toombs, a Georgia attorney. He was a US politician and later founding father of the Confederate States of America . He served this short-lived state as a politician, state secretary and general. Toombs Country gained notoriety within the USA because racially segregated graduation ceremonies were held here until 2004 .

According to the 2010 census, the then 27,223 inhabitants were distributed over 10,375 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.59 people per household. There are a total of 12,144 households.

30.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 47.5% of the population were male and 52.5% were female.

65.1% of the population identified themselves as whites, 24.9% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 7.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 11.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 33,081 USD , while 26.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
