The Richmond County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Augusta , named after Augusta von Sachsen-Gotha , Princess of Wales and was also the capital of Georgia from 1785 to 1795.

The county is located in northeast Georgia, on the border with South Carolina and has an area of ​​851 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water surface, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Burke County , Jefferson County , McDuffie County and Columbia County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Augusta .

history

Richmond County was formed as the Original County on February 5, 1777. It was named after the British Duke of Richmond. The following counties were later formed from Richmond County: Columbia County , Glascock County and McDuffie Counties and parts of the counties: Jefferson County and Warren County .
