The Newton County is a county in the US state of Georgia . The county seat is Covington .

The county is located in north-central Georgia, covers an area of ​​723 square kilometers, seven square kilometers of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Walton County , Morgan County , Jasper County , Butts County , Henry County, and Rockdale Counties .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Newton County was formed on November 30, 1858 as the 53rd county in Georgia from parts of Henry County, Jasper County, and Walton County. It was named after John Newton , a hero of the Revolutionary War.

According to the 2010 census, the then 99,958 inhabitants were distributed over 34,390 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.85 people per household. There are a total of 38,342 households.

76.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.27 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 43.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 21.0% of all households.

32.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 14.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 47.6% of the population were male and 52.4% were female.

53.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 40.9% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 2.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 51,068 USD , while 17.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.
