Covington is a city and also the county seat of Newton County in the US state of Georgia with 13,118 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Covington borders Oxford to the northwest and is about 40 km east of Atlanta .
history
Covington has been the administrative seat of Newton County since 1822 and was named after the politician Leonard Covington . The place received city rights in 1854. In 1864, numerous buildings were destroyed during William T. Sherman's March to Sea during the American Civil War.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 13,118 inhabitants were distributed over 4,767 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.56 people per household. There are a total of 5,526 households.
64.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.20 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 37.2% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.5% of all households.
29.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 47.3% of the population were male and 52.7% were female.
46.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 47.4% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 3.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 5.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 39,959 USD , while 29.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
