Ruby Hightower

Ruby Usher Hightower (* 1880 in Covington (Georgia) , † 1959 in Quitman (Georgia) ) was an American mathematician and university professor. She was the first Shorter College graduate to receive a PhD in 1927.

life and work

Hightower attended high school in Jackson, Georgia and graduated from Shorter Female College in 1896 (after 1923 Shorter College ) in Rome, Georgia . Between her graduation and the resumption of her teaching career at Shorter College in 1919, she taught and studied in various locations. She has taught at Conway Central College in Arkansas , Alabama Normal College (now University of West Alabama ), Cox College in Georgia, Anderson College (now University), then a women's school in South Carolina and Southwest Baptist University and at Hardin College and Conservatory of Music in Missouri . In 1899 she studied at the University of Chicago , in 1913 at the University of London and in 1919 received her master's degree from the University of Georgia . After her master's degree she returned to Shorter University and stayed there until her retirement in 1947, with the exception of a leave of absence from 1924 to 1925. In 1920 she was a Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Missouri and attended graduate school there until the summer of 1921 received a permit to study at the University of Missouri from 1924 to 1925. She received her doctorate in 1927 with the minor subjects physics and astronomy with George Eric Wahlin with the dissertation: On the Classification of the Elements of a Ring. After her retirement in 1947, she continued to live on the college campus of Shorter College and taught there temporarily until 1957.
