The Appling County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Baxley .

The county has an area of ​​1,326 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Toombs County , Tattnall County , Wayne County , Pierce County , Bacon County , Jeff Davis County .

history

The county was formed on December 15, 1814, from Bacon, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Jeff Davis, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne Counties. It was named after the war hero Colonel Daniel Appling . The foundation stone for the first courthouse was laid on December 8, 1818, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1850. In 1864, Baxley became the county's capital. In 1974 Georgia's first nuclear power plant went online on the Altamaha River in Appling County.
