The Appling County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Baxley .
geography
The county has an area of 1,326 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Toombs County , Tattnall County , Wayne County , Pierce County , Bacon County , Jeff Davis County .
history
The county was formed on December 15, 1814, from Bacon, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Jeff Davis, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne Counties. It was named after the war hero Colonel Daniel Appling . The foundation stone for the first courthouse was laid on December 8, 1818, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1850. In 1864, Baxley became the county's capital. In 1974 Georgia's first nuclear power plant went online on the Altamaha River in Appling County.

According to the 2010 census, the then 18,236 inhabitants were distributed over 6,969 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.56 people per household. There are a total of 8,512 households.
70.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.07 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 35.0% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.6% of all households.
28.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 50.2% of the population were male and 49.8% were female.
73.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 18.6% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians, and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 5.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.1% to several ethnic groups. 9.3% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 38,461 USD , while 22.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.
