history
The county was formed on August 15, 1917 and named after William Yates Atkinson , a Georgian governor from 1894 to 1898.
The area was previously inhabited by the Muskhogean Indians and later by the Creek Indians. The last known Indian settlement was on the Alabaha River , about 3 km from the city of Willacoochee . The first white settlers were loggers as the area was rich in pine trees. They used the tree trunks to build houses and later to trade with them. The rafts brought them to the coast across the Satilla River . In 1875 the first railroad tracks were laid in the west by the Brunswick and Western Railroad . Later, through connections with other routes, it became the Atlantic Coastline . A Georgia-Florida line was also laid. Both railway lines meet in Willacoochee. With the construction of the railways, the number of inhabitants increased and a period of immigration began. The first newspaper, the Pearson Tribune , was published in 1915.
