The Stephens County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Toccoa , named after an Indian word that means beautiful .

The county is located in northern Georgia, borders South Carolina in the northeast and is approximately 25 miles from North Carolina in the north . It has an area of 477 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Franklin County , Banks County and Habersham Counties .

history

Stephens County was formed on August 18, 1905 from parts of Franklin County and Habersham County. It was named after Alexander Hamilton Stephens , a Confederate vice president and governor of Georgia.

According to the 2010 census, the then 26,175 inhabitants were distributed over 10,289 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.49 people per household. There are a total of 12,662 households.

70.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 2.96 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 31.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 31.2% of all households.

25.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 47.9% of the population were male and 52.1% were female.
