The county is located in north-central Georgia, 80 km to the northeast from South Carolina and 180 km to the north from Tennessee . It covers an area of ​​314 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Oglethorpe County , Oconee County , Barrow County, and Jackson County .

The county is part of the Athens – Clarke County metropolitan area .

history

Clarke County was formed on December 5, 1801 from parts of Jackson County. It was named after Elijah Clarke , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 116,714 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 45,414 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.37 people per household. There are a total of 51,068 households.

48.5% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.00 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 24.2% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 16.2% of all households.

25.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 44.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 17.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 12.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 26 years. 47.5% of the population were male and 52.5% were female.

61.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 26.6% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 4.2% as Asian Americans . 5.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 10.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 33,430 USD , while 35.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
