The Bryan County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Pembroke .

geography

The county lies between the Ogeechee River in the east and the Midway River in the west in the southeast of Georgia, borders with the southeastern tip on the Atlantic Ocean and is in the northeast about 50 km from the US state South Carolina . It has an area of ​​1,177 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Effingham County , Chatham County , Liberty County , Evans County and Bulloch County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Savannah .

history

The county was formed on December 19, 1793 as the 16th county in Georgia. It was named after Jonathan Bryan , a partisan during the American Revolution. The first seat of administration was Hardwick . In 1860 it became Eden and in 1901 the city of Clyde . In 1937 it became Pembroke. The first courthouse, then still made of wood, was built in 1854.

Worth seeing

In the south of the county, in what is now Fort McAllister Historic Park , is Fort McAllister from the times of the American Civil War, which was captured by General William Sherman on his march to the Atlantic. Also of interest is the Civil War Museum in Pembroke.
