The Brooks County is located in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Quitman .

The county is located in southern Georgia on the northern border of the US state Florida and has an area of ​​1289 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Cook County , Lowndes County , Thomas County, and Colquitt Counties .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Valdosta .

history

Preston Brooks

The county was formed on December 11, 1858 from parts of Lowndes County and Thomas County. It was named after Preston Brooks , a politician and member of the United States House of Representatives. The first settlers were Spanish missionaries who came here from Florida in 1570. During the American Civil War, the county was the main food supplier and was named the Breadbasket of the South . The first courthouse was built in 1864.

According to the 2010 census, the then 16,243 inhabitants were distributed among 6,457 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.52 people per household. There are a total of 7,706 households.

67.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.06 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 31.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 30.6% of all households.

26.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 48.6% of the population were male and 51.4% were female.

59.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 35.3% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 0.3% as Asian Americans . 3.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 5.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .

The average annual income per household was 31,686 USD , while 27.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
