The Sumter County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Americus .

The county is located in central southwest Georgia, about 50 miles to the west from the Alabama border and has an area of 1,276 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Macon County , Dooly County , Crisp County , Lee Counties , Terrell Counties , Webster Counties , Marion Counties, and Schley Counties .
history
Sumter County was formed on December 16, 1831 from parts of Lee County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter from North Carolina , an officer in the French Indian War and the American Revolutionary War.

According to the 2010 census, the then 32,819 inhabitants were distributed over 12,123 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.55 people per household. There are a total of 13,909 households.

42.2% of the population identified themselves as white, 51.8% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 3.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 5.2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
