Plains is a city in Sumter County in the US state of Georgia with 776 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Plains is about 55 km north of Albany and about 220 km south of Atlanta .

history

In the 1840s, the Plains of Dura , Magnolia Springs and Lebanon settlements existed in what is now the Plains. Over time, the settlements gradually grew together, mainly due to the positive development resulting from the cotton cultivation and the commissioning of a new railway line. The place Plains was raised to a city in 1896.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 776 inhabitants were distributed over 250 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.42 people per household. There are a total of 276 households.

58.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.20 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 28.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 36.8% of all households.

20.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 19.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 37.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 50 years. 45.9% of the population were male and 54.1% were female.

51.4% of the population identified themselves as white and 42.7% as African American . 5.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.4% to several ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 21,731 USD , while 40.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 1984 the Plains Historic District was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Plains is crossed by US Highway 280 and Georgia State Routes 45 and 308 . The nearest airport is Albany Airport (around 60 km south).

The crime rate in 2010 was 115 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There was one assault, two break-ins and eight thefts.
