The Monroe County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Forsyth , named after John Forsyth , a US politician, Secretary of State and Governor of Georgia.

The county is located in central northwest Georgia and covers an area of 1,030 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water surface and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jasper County , Jones County , Bibb County , Crawford County , Upson County , Lamar County, and Butts County .
The county is part of the Macon Metropolitan Area .
history
Monroe County was formed from the land of the Creek Indians on May 15, 1821. It was named after the US President James Monroe .

According to the 2010 census, the then 26,424 inhabitants were distributed over 9,662 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.61 people per household. There are a total of 10,710 households.
74.1% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.03 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 33.6% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 26.4% of all households.
25.1% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 16.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 31.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 50.2% of the population were male and 49.8% were female.
73.3% of the population identified themselves as white, 23.7% as African American , 0.3% as Native American and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.0% to several ethnic groups. 2.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 50,625 USD , while 13.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.
