When the first Europeans arrived in 1765, there was an Indian settlement called Pucknawhitla in the place of today's city . On 2 December 1824, the site became the administrative center of the county and was named by William Bainbridge , a Commodore of the Navy of the United States . On December 22, 1829, Bainbridge was officially promoted to town. A training airport for fighter pilots built near the city during the Second World War served as a camp for German prisoners of war after the end of the war. The city's nickname, "The Oak City," comes from the numerous oak trees in the area.
