Information sign for a local recreation area

A local recreation area is an area that is usually not built up or has little development in the vicinity of large cities or metropolitan areas, which is known for its importance for recreation and leisure activities for the population.

For example, forests (such as the Fürth city forest ), lake landscapes (such as the Franconian or Mecklenburg Lake District ), parks (such as the Great Zoo in Berlin) or sports areas are referred to as local recreation areas. Beach promenades with at best free access to the sea (for example the beach area of Venice Beach in California, the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes , the Promenade des Anglais in Nice or the waterfront promenade of Barcola in Trieste ) are also often important local recreation areas for the urban population. Recreational areas partly have the status of a nature reserve .

Even a small swimming lake , a biotope or a Kneipp facility nearby can function as a local recreation area for an urban region.

Recreational areas, which serve tourism in addition to the local catchment area , can also be a holiday destination .
