The Promenade des Anglais ( German  Promenade of the English ) is a seven kilometer long street in Nice . It forms the promenade along the Baie des Anges and has an adjacent beach promenade.

course

The street begins in the east at the intersection with Avenue des Phocéens and initially heads west. It passes the Palais de la Méditerranée , the Musée Masséna and the Negresco and finally takes a southerly direction over a large arc. At the Nice Côte d'Azur Aéroport , it gradually turns again in a westerly direction and finally ends at the western city limits of Nice at the Pont Napoléon III .

history

Before Nice was urbanized, the coast there consisted only of an abandoned strip of pebble beach. The first houses stood on raised ground far from the sea.

From the second half of the 18th century, the English began to spend the winters in Nice, where they enjoyed the panorama along the coast. When an influx of beggars reached Nice one particularly harsh winter, some of the wealthy English suggested a useful project for them: building a walkway along the sea.

The city of Nice encouraged this work with the prospect of a pleasant promenade. The promenade was first called Camin dei Anglès by the people of Nice in their Nissart dialect . After the county of Nice was annexed to France by the Treaty of Turin in 1860 , the dialect name was replaced by the French translation Promenade des Anglais .

There was an attack here on July 14, 2016, with over 80 dead.

The promenade today

For residents, the Promenade des Anglais is simply the Promenade or La Prom . Strollers, joggers, inline skaters and skateboarders cavort on the promenade at any time of the day.

In addition to numerous events such as the annual carnival that take place along the promenade, the promenade is known for its blue chairs ( chaises bleues ) and its pergolas .

Many luxury hotels are lined up on the promenade, the most famous being the Hotel Negresco . There are also many small restaurants right on the beach.

North, d. H. On the land side of the promenade there is a main street of the same name, which has at least three lanes in each direction. In the medium term, the reintroduction of a line of the Nice tram is planned, which in the area of the Promenade des Anglais close to the city center will be implemented without overhead lines to preserve the appearance and operated in battery mode or run in a tunnel.
