The Fürth city forest (formerly also Fürberg forest and communal forest Fürth ) is a contiguous natural forest area with protected forest status in the Fürth city area, which covers an area of around 560 hectares. The city forest , together with the adjacent Zirndorfer city forest, has a high regional significance in the field of nature conservation and as a leisure and recreational area .

geography

The Fürth city forest rises west-southwest of the city of Fürth, beyond the southwest bypass and the Main-Danube Canal . It belongs to the southern district and borders the Fürth district to the west . Together with the adjacent Zirndorfer Stadtwald, southwest of Fürth, the two forests form a protected " fauna-flora-habitat " area of over 830 hectares .

history

Extensive natural monument quarries in the Fürth city forest

In 1385, the Fürth city forest was first mentioned in a document as the Fürberg forest .

The forest was designated as a landscape protection area in 1976 and declared a ban forest in 1985 . In 1987, the Association for the Care of Franconian Customs set up a wild boar enclosure in the city forest.

In 2002, the Fürth city forest together with the adjacent Zirndorfer city forest and another state forest - a total of 836 hectares - were designated as a "fauna-flora-habitat area" according to the FFH directive and part of the European biotope network Natura 2000 , which protects habitats that have become rare and wants to promote biodiversity. On December 22, 2004, another ordinance issued by the Fürth District Office on Bannwald followed.

In 2009, the Fürth Stadtwald received the Bavarian State Prize for exemplary forest management and in 2015 the city of Fürth was awarded the “Forest before Wild Prize” by the Bavarian Ecological Hunting Association .

Quarries

The quarries in the Fürth city forest, which are distributed over the entire area, are a registered natural monument of the city of Fürth and a geotope (563A001) designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . In the Stadtwald quarries, the castle sandstone was extracted as an important building material until the Middle Ages. A larger quarry area with an information board is located near the Rangau view above the Felsenkeller forest restaurant.

Forest landmarks

In addition, several forest boundary stones of the Fürth city forest are under monument protection. The cuboid stones are embedded in the forest floor and show the borderline through a channel on the top. They are about 20 to 50 meters apart in the city forest and are connected by narrow paths.

Plants and animal species

The Fürth city forest consists largely of pines mixed with deciduous trees. The trees are predominantly on castle sandstone .

The forest is home to rare animal species and is therefore a special protected area of European interest in the Natura 2000 habitat network. Various bat species ( Bechstein's bat , brown long-eared bat , fringed bat and water bat ) and the black woodpecker live in the city forest . The Fürth city forest, together with the adjacent Zirndorfer city forest, provides the largest known winter quarters for mouse-eared bats in the Central Franconian basin (over 50 animals of this species were counted in 1998).

Spell forest

The Fürth city forest, together with the Zirndorfer city forest and the Zirndorfer forest, was declared a ban forest , as these forests “due to their location and their areal extent in the agglomeration of the cities of Erlangen , Fürth, Nuremberg and Schwabach are irreplaceable and their surface substance must therefore be preserved ", Because they are" extremely important for the climate, water balance and air purification. "

Wild boar enclosure

In the urban forest is a wild boar enclosure with wild boar . The enclosure is open to the public at all times and does not cost any entry.

Silver pond

The Silberweiher, two artificially created ponds in the Fürth city forest, which are fed with water by the Dambach, have developed into an important biotope for dragonflies , frogs and newts . They are located in a small valley cut between the wild boar enclosure and Eschenaubuck. Between the two ponds there are remains of an earth wall that was part of a firing range during wartime .

Recreation

Hiking trail in the Fürth city forest

Several cycle paths and designated hiking trails run through the Fürth city forest. There are designated and signposted Nordic walking routes for sporting activities . A fitness trail begins above the Waldhotel Forsthaus and leads on an approximately 3 km long circuit through the city forest, past the silver pond and a wildlife enclosure. An educational forest trail starts at the city forestry and leads on a circular path through a quarry area.

City forestry

The city forester's office (Heilstättenstraße 130) is located on the edge of the city forest.
