Quarry

The quarries in the Fürth city forest are former abandoned sandstone quarries near Burgfarrnbach , a district of the city of Fürth in Bavaria .

location

The quarries are located in the Fürth city forest about five kilometers west of Fürth and two kilometers south of Burgfarrnbach.

description

The quarry area has an area of around 10,000 square meters and is the best-preserved quarry in the Fürth area. The up to eight meters high walls made of diagonally layered, medium to coarse-grained sandstone still show clear signs of processing. The heavy work of the stone crushers was partly made easier by a vertical natural cleft . The quarry in the Fürth city forest covers the eastern part of the Cadolzburg ridge, a ridge made of castle sandstone . In this area the coarse-grained Nuremberg facies are interlocked with the fine-grained Heldburger facies of the Burgsandstein. The mining of the castle sandstone was mainly based on the mighty sandstone layers of the Nuremberg facies. Fine-grained sandstones are more resistant to weathering, the medium- to coarse-grained sandstones less.

The quarries are designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 563A001 and as a natural monument . See also the list of geotopes in the Fürth district .

history

During the Triassic , an extensive depression stretched across Central Europe that was at times continental and covered by shallow seas. The center of this Germanic Basin was in the Hesse - Thuringia - Northern Bavaria area . The high areas were removed and the rubble was transported from the rivers into the Germanic Basin. The coarse material remained on the edge of the pool. Further towards the center of the basin, sandy and then clayey sediments predominate. Inland deltas and lakes formed in the center of the basin itself. At the edge of the basin the sandy facies predominate.

In addition to the forestry use, the extraction of sandstone was an important branch of the economy in this area in the past. Today the area is used purely for recreational purposes and is a popular destination for hikers , climbers and mountain bikers .

Rock cellar

The entrance to a spacious rock cellar is located at the foot of the northern slope of the quarries . The system of grid-shaped corridors belonged to the former Gräflich-Pücklerschen brewery. The cellar, which was laid out between 1849 and 1852, is listed as a monument D-5-63-000-1707 . It used to be used to store beer and during the Second World War it was used as a shelter and emergency shelter by the population. Today the cellars are locked and some are in danger of collapsing or have already collapsed.

Waldschenke to the rock cellar

The building erected in front of the cellars in 1863 initially served the count's brewery in the Burgfarrnbacher Schlosshof as a hop store. Between the world wars, Johann Humbser, a brewery entrepreneur from Fürth, converted the building into a restaurant in 1921 and is still a popular inn today. The two-storey, eaves-sided gable roof building with sandstone ground floor is designated as a monument D-5-63-000-1639 and was renovated in 2008.

Access

The quarries are freely accessible all year round. In some places there is a risk of falling. There are also numerous, partly poorly secured ventilation shafts for the rock cellars below. You can reach the area on foot or by bike via marked hiking trails.
