The Ecological Hunting Association (ÖJV) is a German hunting association, which one of the findings of ecology -oriented hunting is committed. As a non-profit , registered association , the ÖJV is the association of currently twelve regional groups. As of September 29, 2019, the number of members represented by the regional groups in the ÖJV Federal Association was around 2800.

history

background

Wise area to assess the influence of wildlife on natural regeneration - note the lack of regeneration outside the fence

In his 1971 film, Remarks about the Red Deer , Horst Stern showed a broad public for the first time the damage caused by game damage in German forests, which has long been known in forest science and which causes high populations of red deer and roe deer through game browsing , sweeping and peeling . The resulting scandal put the film on the agenda of the responsible committees in the Bavarian State Parliament and the German Bundestag . This, as well as requests to speak from representatives of nature conservation and forestry and the developing public discussion have led to increased criticism of traditional hunting practices, such as the selection of trophies and the feeding of coveted game species as well as the resulting high game populations, since the 1970s .

Against this background and under the impression of a lack of willingness to reform in the traditional hunting associations, the Ecological Hunting Association of Bavaria (ÖJV Bayern) was launched on Hubertus Day in 1988 at the founding meeting in the Munich Hofbräuhaus . The following were elected to the board: Richard Plochmann , Professor of Forest Policy and Forest History , Sebastian von Rotenhan , Chairman of the Working Group on Natural Forest Management (ANW) and owner of a well-known model company for natural forest management in Rentweinsdorf , as well as Hans Sleik, a trained professional hunter and head of the Bavarian Forestry Director Salforste in Austria.

Other well-known founding members were Georg Sperber , forester and as a forester Director Head of the Forestry Commission Ebrach , Ulrich Ammer , a professor of land use planning and conservation, Peter Burschel , professor of silviculture and forest management , as well as Walter Helemann, editor of the hunting magazine "game". The co-initiators Horst Stern , science journalist and filmmaker, Hubert Weinzierl , long-time chairman of the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern , and Wolfgang Schröder , professor of wildlife biology and hunting, were present at the inaugural meeting and the press conference that followed.

ÖJV Federal Association

In March 1991, representatives of the then existing four ÖJV state associations (Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate) met in Bad Nauheim, Hesse and decided to found a joint umbrella organization under the name Ökologischer Jagdverband eV The headquarters of the federal office is in Herzogenaurach . The chairman of the ÖJV Federal Association has been Elisabeth Emmert as the first woman to head a German hunting association since it was founded in 1991.

In 1996, the ÖJV Federal Association became a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring , replacing the ÖJV Bavaria, which had been represented there since 1990. The ÖJV Federal Association has been a member of the International Alpine Protection Commission (CIPRA) since January 2014 . There is a cooperation with the Austrian sister organization Ökologischer Jagdverband Österreichs , founded in 2010 .

Principles

Shooters during a driven hunt

The association sees hunting as a legitimate form of sustainable use of nature. As a science, ecology should provide the basis for hunting, which affects silviculture , nature , species and animal protection . Hunting should prevent ecological and unreasonable economic damage in the cultural landscape and enable sustainable use of natural resources. Consequently, the needs, for example, wild boar are regulated because of its damage to agriculture.

Due to the current environmental problems, above all climate change and the associated mass reproduction of the bark beetle , the importance of protecting forests is increasing . That is why silviculture and the conversion of forests must be supported by hunting. The growth of the forests is significantly influenced by hoofed game, since deer , roe deer , chamois , fallow deer and other hoofed game species damage or destroy their habitat with increasing game density through browsing, peeling and sweeping. The consequences of excessive hoofed game populations are segregated forests with tendencies towards monocultures , less diversity and therefore less stability; This is also associated with higher economic costs due to artificial planting, cost-intensive fences or other protective measures. Hoofed game must therefore be hunted in such a way that the forests can rejuvenate without additional protective measures, so that the focus of ecological hunting is on the development of natural, mixed forests. Use and protection went hand in hand here.

The trophy hunting with the trophy- oriented hunting seasons and the feeding of game contributed to these problems, since the promotion of trophy winners and the desire to capture the largest possible trophies lead to the unilateral promotion of these animals at the expense of the forest. Game feeding is unnatural, since the game is adapted to the winter food shortage due to the long evolution. Loss of weak pieces served to keep the populations healthy. Feeding is often counterproductive, as it increases the reproduction rate and thus additionally increases the forest-game problem.

Thus hunting was the ecological task of the natural variety ( diversity ) to promote. The self-regulatory mechanisms of nature would have to be taken into account. The function of predators in the ecosystem should be appreciated against this background and control should only be avoided as a competition to human use. The association therefore welcomes the re-immigration of the predators wolf and lynx and sees them as helpers in regulating the game population. Where there is serious damage to the biotope , as with hoofed game, this can be prevented by hunting. The establishment of stable, mixed forests should be promoted through adapted hoofed game populations. In principle, the hunt must be harmless to the natural environment and be carried out with as little disruption as possible. Efficient hunting methods, such as B. driven hunts should be encouraged due to the lower disquiet of the game.

criticism

The goals of the ÖJV are very controversial among the traditional hunters. The association and other representatives of near-natural mixed forest construction are sometimes accused of reducing the stocks of roe deer and red deer, for example with reference to the principle "forest before game", which has been anchored in Art want to shoot together or exterminate at random.
