history

Until the 18th century

The place name probably does not come from Eber , but perhaps from an old pre-Germanic tribe ebr- (water), originally related to the Basque ibar (valley).

Ebrach and its former monastery complex

Ebrach abbey was in 1127 one of the first right Rhine een Cistercian monasteries by the Frankish Edelfreien founded Berno and Richwin of Eberau. In 1127 twelve monks moved from the mother monastery Morimond . In 1200, Abbot Hermann I began building the abbey church , which was completed in 1285. It is 88 meters long and is one of the most beautiful monuments of early Gothic architecture. In the building there is a splendid classical interior that was renovated in the 2010s . It comprises over 50 windows, 26 altars and a rose window twelve meters in diameter above the west portal, based on the model of Notre Dame in Paris . The windows were repainted in 1887. Although the Ebrach abbots repeatedly sought imperial immediacy for their monastery, the monastery remained under the rule of the Würzburg bishop. It was one of the richest abbeys in Franconia and had outposts ("official castles") in Mainstockheim , Sulzheim , Oberschwappach and Burgwindheim .

19th century

The monastery was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization , the place came under the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 like large parts of Franconia to Bavaria (see also History of Franconia ). Ebrach Monastery was only officially granted imperial immediacy when it was abolished. Before 1803 this had always been successfully contested by the Würzburg bishopric . The monastery church has been the Catholic parish church of the Assumption ever since . The baroque monastery buildings have served as a penal institution ( correctional facility in Ebrach ) since 1851 .

Territorial reform of the 1970s

On April 1, 1971, the former municipality of Neudorf bei Ebrach was incorporated as part of the municipal reform. On January 1, 1972, Buch, Großbirkach and Großgressingen followed.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Ebrach
Blazon : "Above a red shield base, inside a silver sloping bar, in gold a jumping black boar holding a silver abbot's staff at an angle in its mouth."

The boar with crosier refers to the legend of the founding of the Ebrach monastery , which tells that a boar showed the monks where to found the monastery by snatching the abbot's staff and dropping it at the site of the later monastery.

In addition to the large main organ (concert organ) on the west gallery with a modern work in a baroque case, which was built by the Würzburg organ builder Johann Philipp Seuffert in 1743, the former abbey church in the monk's choir houses two original baroque choir organs from the workshop of the Frankfurt organ builder Johann Christian Koehler . The two instruments are an organological rarity, as their players can see each other due to the positioning of the gaming tables . In the course of the extensive interior restoration of the church, the choir organs were removed and restored by the Klais organ building company, supported by the Hoffmann company, by October 2012 . They were consecrated again on November 4, 2012 by the Archbishop of Bamberg .
