Surname
The origin of the name is disputed. The Old High German word guza (pour) could indicate Gießbach. But since the neighboring town of Hohengüßbach is not on a stream, the name could also be derived from Gosbert or Götz. The place name in its current spelling appeared for the first time in 1750. It was only in the middle of the 19th century that it gained legal legitimacy. Other sources indicate that Breitengüßbach owes its name to the Main tributary Güßbach due to its width and Hohengüßbach because of its high position in relation to the water .
history
Until the church is planted
After the first mention as "Gusibach" at the beginning of the 9th century (around 812) and the notarized membership of the Hallstadt royal court , King Heinrich II gave the royal court with Güßbach to the Bamberg church as table goods in 1007 when the Bamberg diocese was founded . As early as the first half of the 13th century, Breitengüßbach had its own church, St. Leonhard. In 1392 Güßbach was separated from the parish Hallstadt and received its own parish rights.
The Güßbacher gave themselves a new village order (village constitution) as early as 1594 as the basis for a regulated community system in the following centuries. The schoolmaster, the blacksmith, the bath worker, the shepherd and a midwife were provided and paid by the community. The community had its own parish hall, a community smithy and a public bathing room. During the Swedish Wars on February 8, 1633 half of Güßbach was reduced to rubble and ashes.
In 1750 the place name Breitengüßbach was used for the first time. Until the secularization, the place belonged to the bishopric of Bamberg , which from 1500 was in the Franconian Empire . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place, like large parts of Franconia, has belonged to Bavaria (see also History of Franconia ). In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
20th and 21st centuries
During the First World War , the appearance of the village and the rural structure hardly changed. The Second World War also passed the community off lightly.
After the Second World War a gymnasium was built, water pipes and sewers were laid and a sewage treatment plant was built. A new eight-class elementary school was built and a sports center was created. Extensive, attractive building areas have been designated, as well as a larger commercial area. A recreational forest was bought and expanded. All of this created the conditions for lively settlement activity.
Breitengüßbach was classified as a small center . The conversion of the former school building in the town center to the town hall in 1979 created the basis for a modern, citizen-friendly administration. The population has grown to about 4600, u. a. through the settlement of large building areas.
Incorporations
In the course of the municipal reform , Hohengüßbach and Leimershof were incorporated on January 1, 1972, and Unteroberndorf and Zückshut on May 1, 1978 .
Population development
In the period from 1988 to 2018, the community grew from 3,673 to 4,512 by 839 inhabitants or 22.8%. A peak was reached in 2011 with 4693 inhabitants.

The municipal coat of arms goes back to the imprint of a municipality seal from 1796, which depicts a farmer with a staff in hand. Possibly it is a village judge ( mayor ).
