The Breitengüßbach – Dietersdorf railway was a branch line in Upper Franconia . The single-track line with a gauge of 1435 mm ( standard gauge ) was not electrified. It branched north-east of the Breitengüßbach station just a few hundred meters after the branch line towards Ebern – Maroldsweisach from the main Bamberg – Hof line to the north in the lower Itzgrund .

The Itz to Kaltenbrunn followed the first 20 kilometers . From there it led in the Alster and Rodach valleys to Seßlach and Dietersdorf .

The railway line went into operation on October 1, 1913. A connection to the Itzgrundbahn , which ended just 6.7 kilometers from Kaltenbrunn in Rossach, was considered, but it was never realized. The reasons were, on the one hand, that they did not want to compete with the existing, but somewhat longer main line Bamberg-Lichtenfels-Hof, which ran almost parallel only a few kilometers away. On the other hand, the Itzgrundbahn was in the Duchy of Coburg and the route to Dietersdorf was in the Kingdom of Bavaria . After Coburg was annexed to Bavaria, the gap failed in the following years because of the costs.

There was also never a connection to Lindenau in Thuringia , only six kilometers away from Dietersdorf , where the 1000 mm narrow-gauge railway on the Hildburghausen – Lindenau-Friedrichshall line ended.

The travel time of the four pairs of passenger trains in 1970 was one hour. The passenger traffic was stopped on September 28, 1975, on September 27, 1981 the complete shutdown took place. From August 1982 to March 1983, the route was completely dismantled and is now largely used as a cycle path.

The Pizzeria La Stazione is located in the Kaltenbrunn-Untermerzbach train station, reminding of the past as a train station.
