Swell:

The Bamberg – Hof railway line is largely a two-track main line in Bavaria . It runs from Bamberg via Lichtenfels , Kulmbach , Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg and Münchberg to Hof .

As part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 8 , the new and upgraded Nuremberg – Ebensfeld – Erfurt line is being built parallel to the line . In the future, there will be four parallel tracks between Bamberg and Ebensfeld.

history

The line was built as part of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn from Lindau (Lake Constance) to Hof . It was built by the Royal Bavarian State Railroad in three stages between 1846 and 1848. The originally single-track line was extended by a second track in 1891, and the electrification from Bamberg to Lichtenfels and on via the Frankenwaldbahn to Saalfeld was completed on May 10, 1939. In the 1960s, the second track between Marktschorgast and Stammbach was dismantled due to insufficient traffic.

Opening dates

  • February 15, 1846: Bamberg - Lichtenfels
  • October 15, 1846: Lichtenfels - Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg
  • November 1, 1848: Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg - Hof

Incidents

On the afternoon of May 12, 1907, the Berlin – Munich express train (D 40) derailed at about 80 km / h in the area of the Ebensfeld station due to a track warping due to extreme heat. All cars derailed, but no one was seriously injured.

ABS Nuremberg – Ebensfeld

Parallel to the existing line, two tracks of the upgraded line are being built between Bamberg and Ebensfeld . The upgraded line is designed for speeds of up to 230 km / h. The junction of the two routes is the new Unterleiterbach overtaking station south of Ebensfeld.

In the course of the expansion between Breitengüßbach and Zapfendorf, the route between Lichtenfels and Bamberg was completely closed from January 11 to September 4, 2016. The stations Breitengüßbach, Ebing, Zapfendorf and Ebensfeld were made barrier-free (platform height: 55 cm). The barrier-free equipment was initially not planned due to the traffic volume of less than 1000 boarding / disembarking per day. During the ongoing planning approval, the federal government decided to finance the barrier-free expansion. The retrofitting of elevators was considered separately according to planning law, the elevators went into operation in 2017.

After the start of the line in Bamberg train station, the disused branch line to Scheßlitz and the main line to Rottendorf branch off , which runs parallel up to the level of the allotment garden and then turns to the northwest. From the left, a connecting track from the Würzburg route meets the route, which then crosses under the federal motorway 70 , passes the western edge of Hallstadt and runs parallel to the federal road 4 , reaching Breitengüßbach . After the station, the branch line to Ebern and the disused and dismantled branch line to Dietersdorf . The route passes under the federal highway 73 and runs parallel to the Main . Via the stations Ebing , Zapfendorf , Ebensfeld , where the high-speed line branches off to Erfurt , and Bad Staffelstein , the line reaches Lichtenfels, where the Werrabahn branches off to Coburg .

From the Lichtenfels train station , the route up to and including Mainleus runs parallel to the Main again . In Hochstadt - Marktzeuln the Frankenwaldbahn branches off to Ludwigsstadt and Saalfeld, in Kulmbach the local railway from Thurnau and Bayreuth joined the line until 1993 . Via Untersteinach and Ludwigschorgast, the line reaches Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station , which in the past had its own depot. Today it houses the German Steam Locomotive Museum . After the train station, the line branches off to Bayreuth , from which the connecting track known as the Schlömener curve meets the line to Hof just a few meters away . The route then leads over the inclined plane up to the Marktschorgast train station , from the end of which it is single-tracked to Stammbach . Via Münchberg and Schwarzenbach an der Saale , the line reaches Oberkotzau , where it joins the lines from Weiden and Selb , crosses the Saale at Moschendorf and reaches the terminus at Hof .

State of development

The line from Bamberg to Hochstadt-Marktzeuln has two tracks and is electrified. The subsequent line to Hof is not electrified, but is also double-tracked, except for the single-track section Marktschorgast – Stammbach. The route-related maximum speed is in sections 160 km / h.

Trains

Until the timetable change in December 2017 and the order following relocation of the long distance to the Nuremberg-Erfurt high-speed railway drove on the track of Bamberg about Lichtenfels to High City Marktzeuln InterCity Express trains on the line Munich -Nürnberg- Leipzig - Berlin (- Hamburg ) in Hourly. Used came ICE-T tilting trains 411 series.

Since then, there is only one ICE connection during the week from Lichtenfels via Bamberg to Munich. In addition, a pair of IC trains runs from Leipzig to Karlsruhe with stops in Bamberg and Lichtenfels, and a two-hour IC connection is to be set up from 2023.

On the Bamberg – Lichtenfels section, a regional express (RE) runs every two hours on the Nuremberg – Bamberg – Lichtenfels– Sonneberg (Thuringia) line , and there is also an RE every two hours from Nuremberg to Leipzig main station via Kronach , Saalfeld / Saale and Jena . A RE Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Hof / Bayreuth also runs every two hours . The offer is supplemented by the regional train line (Nuremberg) –Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Kronach – Saalfeld, which runs every hour to Kronach and every two hours north of Kronach. Individual trains are tied through to Nuremberg.

The Regional Express trains to Sonneberg / Leipzig consist of class 442 multiple units approved for 160 km / h . Due to the tight curve radii on the inclined plane and the non-electrified sections Hochstadt-Marktzeuln-Hof / Bayreuth, the Bamberg – Hof / Bayreuth line is used by the diesel-powered tilting technology trains of the 612 series, which are separated or combined in the Neuenmarkt - Wirsberg system stop . Since December 2013, the 612 series has only been in use every two hours between Lichtenfels and Bayreuth / Hof. In the other hour, vehicles of the 641 series run between Bamberg and Bayreuth / Hof . The Würzburg – Bayreuth / Hof connection in Bamberg, which was free of transfers until December 2013, was thus broken, as class 425 electric multiple units between Bamberg and Würzburg took over the previous services of the 612 series.

The Agilis railway company has been serving the following routes on the Bamberg – Hof railway line since 2011 as the winner of the Bavarian Railway Company’s tender :

  • from Ebern via Breitengüßbach to Bamberg (hourly)
  • from Bad Rodach via Lichtenfels and Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg to Weiden (every hour)
  • from Helmbrechts via Münchberg and Hof Hbf to Bad Steben (every two hours)
  • individual trains Bamberg - Lichtenfels
  • individual trains Kulmbach - Münchberg

since December 2012 also Hof - Marktredwitz.

The Regional Express trains travel between Marktschorgast and Hof from Nuremberg via Bayreuth to Hof.

E-Netz Franken

With the timetable change in December 2011, there should be a change in the regional express trains on this route. It was planned new railcars of series 442 on the way to Sonnenberg use. This RE should consist of two detachable train parts. The train division was planned alternately in Bamberg (for the RE to Würzburg Hbf ) or in Lichtenfels (for the RE to Jena Saalbahnhof ). Since the series 442 (Talent 2) had delivery and approval problems, this concept could only come into effect one year later at the timetable change in December 2012.

Dichotomy

The RE line Würzburg – Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Bayreuth / Hof, which ran through December 2013, was split in two in December 2013. This avoids uneconomical driving with diesel trains under contact wire. DB Regio Franken won the tender in the Main-Spessart area at the beginning of 2013. Since December 2013, the Frankfurt (Main) –Würzburg – Bamberg line has been served by DB Regio Bayern Verkehrsbetrieb Franken. The Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Bayreuth / Hof line was transferred to DB Regio Bayern Verkehrsbetrieb Nordostbayern. The 425 series has been running on the RE Würzburg – Bamberg line since December 2013 . The Bamberg – Bayreuth / Hof line has been served by class 641 diesel multiple units since December 2013 .

future

Complete electrification

In March 2013, plans by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs became known to fully electrify the route between Hof and Hochstadt. The electrification is to be included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. However, the financing is still unclear.
