history
Until the church is planted
Untersteinach was first mentioned in a document in 1281. The aristocratic Varell family shaped the history of the place for six generations until it died out in 1765. As part of the Prussian principality of Bayreuth , the former manor fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
The great fire of 1706
On August 10, 1706, a boy prank led to the biggest catastrophe in the history of Untersteinach. Three teenagers had played with a key box in a barn and the building caught fire. Due to the beautiful weather and the beginning of the harvest season, almost all of the town's residents were in the fields. This enabled the fire to spread quickly and almost the entire village burned down. There was a fatality to mourn. After the accident, the Untersteinacher were taken to the neighboring villages. Two houses were spared, one of which is the oldest building in Untersteinach. It is privately owned and a listed building.
Population development
In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 1941 to 1811 by 130 or 6.7%. On December 31, 1997, Untersteinach had 2076 inhabitants.
